FOOTBALL: Charlestown’s Daniel earns MVP honors in All-Star Classic

Pirates’ quarterback leads South past North, 27-6

CHARLESTOWN —  Charlestown’s Aaron Daniel threw for a touchdown pass and ran for two more scores to help the Indiana South All-Stars beat the North 27-6 on Friday night in the Indiana Football Coaches Association Grange Insurance All-Star Classic at North Central High School. The South extended its series lead in the All-Star Classic, 26-21.

Daniel completed both of his pass attempts for 57 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown strike to Indianapolis Ritter’s Alex Parrett in the first quarter. The 6-foot, 195-pound Daniel ran for 60 yards on six attempts. He had a 9-yard touchdown run at the 3:18 mark of the third quarter and a 15-year TD scamper with 6:39 left in regulation.

Those statistics helped Daniel earn the game’s most valuable player award.

Alex Rodriguez, a running back from Lawrence Central, added 79 yards on the ground for the South.

The South blocked three kicks, one on an extra point, another on a field goal that would have cut the lead to eight points in the fourth quarter and the third on a punt.

Daniel is the fourth player in Charlestown history to play in the All-Star Classic. The other three Pirates were Kem Martin in 1976, Richard Lanham in 1990 and B.J. Steele in 1999.

Daniel was last season’s News and Tribune Area Player of the Year and was recently named the newspaper’s Boys’ Athlete of the Year. He ended his high school career as Charlestown’s all-time leading passer and rusher. Daniel will be a preferred walk-on for the Indiana University football team this coming season.

Other players of local interest playing in Friday’s All-Star game were Columbus East offensive lineman Rob McKee, Jennings County tight end Tommy Taylor, Corydon Central wide receiver Tyler Ross and Brownstown Central cornerback Dylan Patman.

Ross made one reception for 11 yards.
