H.S. ROUNDUP: Vires’ 3 leads to Austin upset of Borden

Brownstown beats Silver Creek with 15-1 third quarter

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Josh Vires hit a 3-pointers with 10 seconds left to lift Austin past visiting Borden 45-43 on Friday.

“To Vires’ credit, he hit a big shot,” Braves’ coach Doc Nash said.

After Vires’ 3 — his only points of the night — the Braves’ offense stalled, forcing Nash to call a timeout with three seconds left. After the break, Billy Kirchgessner’s 3-pointer sailed right at the buzzer for Borden’s second straight loss after a 9-0 start.

“We’re not shooting the ball very well,” Nash said. “We made two critical turnovers that we don’t usually make.”

Devin Richey, who was on the Henryville team that gave the Braves their only regular-season loss a year ago, led all scorers with 17 for the Eagles, who ended a five-game losing streak to improve to 3-6.

Garrett Vick led Borden with 13 points, while Jalen McCoy had 11, Billy Kirchgessner 10 and Josh Vollstedt six for the Braves, who are off until next Friday when they go to Christian Academy of Indiana.

• Dragons doomed by third quarter: After being deadlocked with eighth-ranked Brownstown Central, Silver Creek was outscored 15-1 in the third quarter and fell 39-23 on Friday.

The Dragons, who are 3-8 and 0-5 in the Mid-Southern Conference following the loss, were led by Brooks Howell’s eight points. Lucas Barnett finished with five for Creek.

Brett McCrory and Skylar Thompson scored 10 apiece to pace the 10-1 Braves, who are still tied atop the conference standings with Clarksville at 4-0.

The Dragons travel to New Albany (5-5) next Friday.
