Astle, Sherrell to play in IHSBCA North-South All-Star Weekend

Recent Jeffersonville graduate Trent Astle and recent New Albany graduate Garrett Sherrell will both play for the South All-Star team during the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Weekend July 12-14 at Wabash College in Crawfordsville.

Plus Charlestown baseball coach Ricky Romans will be an assistant coach for the South.

The South will play the North All-Star team in a three-game series. The first two games will be on Saturday, July 13 at 1 and 5 p.m. On Sunday, July 14, the teams will square off in a wooden bat game at noon.

Astle was this past season’s News and Tribune Area Player of the Year, while Sherrell made the All-Area first team. Both players will play at the NCAA Division I level next season. Astle will be at Xavier, while Sherrell will play at Arkansas-Little Rock.

Salem to host 24th annual Firecracker 200 on Thursday

Salem Speedway will host the 24th annual Firecracker 200 on Thursday, July 4. The 200-lap street stock race will begin at approximately 7 p.m. In addition, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Pure Stocks and Portland Recycling Front Wheel Drive Stocks will each have 50-lap features on Independence Day.

Tickets will be $16 for adults and $5 for children ages 7-12 at the door on Thursday. Children ages 6 and under will be admitted free if accompanied by an adult.

Spectator gates will open at 2:30 p.m., with practice starting at 3 p.m. The first race will be at 5:30 p.m.
