DISTRICT 5 TOURNAMENT: New Albany rolls past Jeff, 15-6

Both teams go deep on Saturday in 11-12 matchup

CLARKSVILLE — In a 11-12 baseball division contest in the District 5 All-Star tournament on Saturday at Clarksville Little League Park, both Jeff/GRC and New Albany came out swinging.

But after hot starts from both sides, New Albany eventually ran away from Jeffersonville with a 15-6 victory.

For the first three innings, the game was an interesting back-and-forth contest.

Jeffersonville struck first with a solo home run off the bat of Jared Casey in the top of the second inning.

New Albany responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-spot, started by a Cody Medley solo blast. New Albany added another run in the third to go up 3-1, and looked to be gaining control of the game.

But Jeffersonville would have none of that and came out in the fourth with five straight hits, including a Casey three-run bomb. It was his second homer of the game. Two batters later, teammate Keiton Smith smacked a two-run dinger.

Jeffersonville finished the inning scoring five runs and led New Albany, 6-3.

New Albany responded with a massive inning of its own in the bottom of the fourth.

New Albany sent 17 batters to the plate and collected nine hits, leading to 12 runs in the inning. The inning started awful for Jeffersonville as the first three batters all reached base because of walks.

After tying the game at six, New Albany’s Josh Castleman completely turned the tides with a three-run shot that sucked the life out of Jeff.

Cooper Biven picked up the win on the mound for New Albany. He went five innings, giving up six hits and two walks. He allowed six earned runs and struck out 10.

Biven also contributed with the bat, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scoring twice.

Teammate Andrew Ricketts also was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Castleman finished 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored. Medley was 1-for-3 with an RBI and he scored twice.

Casey was outstanding at the plate for Jeffersonville. He hit two homers that tallied four RBIs and two runs scored.

Also for Jeff, Ben Harbeson was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run, and Josh Kruer also scored a run.

Jeffersonville falls to 1-1 in pool play, and New Albany goes to 1-0.

New Albany is scheduled to complete a suspended game with Highlander Youth Recreation at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. New Albany led 14-1 over HYR in the bottom of the fourth last Tuesday when the contest was stopped because of lightning. Jeff/GRC will face Charlestown at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
