DISTRICT 5 TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: New Albany wins 11-12 softball title

Jenks leads All-Stars past Jeff/GRC, 5-1

CLARKSVILLE — The New Albany 11-12 softball All-Stars became the first team to win a District 5 championship on Saturday at Clarksville Little League Park.

Morgan Jenks’ complete-game outing in the pitcher’s circle led New Albany past Jeff/GRC in the 11-12 softball final in the District 5 All-Star tournament, 5-1.

In six innings of work, Jenks yielded one earned run. She struck out seven and walked one. She was assisted by New Albany catcher Delaney Zack, who did a great job of keeping the ball in front of her during the contest.

“We piled on Morgan Jenks’ back and she brought us here,” New Albany head coach Kevin Vormbrock said. “We didn’t hit the ball as well as we have all year. But our defense stepped up and made plays behind Morgan, who was fantastic. I’m proud of these girls.”

New Albany got its first run in the bottom of the second inning. It added another run in the fourth to go up 2-0, followed by three runs in the fifth. Jeff’s lone score came in the top of the sixth.

New Albany’s Dianna Stacy and Haley Hagedorn each went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.

New Albany has no time to rest. It returns to Clarksville Little League Park on Sunday to play Bedford in the first two games of a best-of-three-game section tournament. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 2 p.m., followed by Game 2 at 5 p.m.

If New Albany and Bedford split today’s contests, the third and deciding game will be at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at Clarksville Little League Park.

“I’m nervous,” Vormbrock said. “We are going to stick with the same game plan. Morgan Jenks — I’m going to ride her until she says she can’t go anymore.”

Nan Garcia paced Jeff/GRC on Saturday, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Teammate Madison Bush was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
