GREG'S PICKS: Looking forward to March already

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Like the football season, the 2012-13 boys’ basketball season has the makings of being one of the best in years in Southern Indiana.

Four of the 12 teams in the News and Tribune coverage — Borden, Clarksville, Providence and Jeffersonville — are ranked. New Albany is talented enough to be and likely a few plays from being in the top 10. And if they keep winning, it may not be long before the appearance of Charlestown and Christian Academy in the polls.

This March promises to be one of the best in recent memory. Until then, there are plenty of good games to go around.

This weekend brings Floyd Central at New Albany and Charlestown at Clarksville — two of the best rivalries in the state — a double Hoosier Hills Conference weekend for Jeff, big conference games for Borden and Silver Creek, plus the academies — Rock Creek Academy and Christian Academy — going head-to-head.

If you can’t find a game to go watch this weekend, you’re just not trying hard enough.

GAMES TO WATCH (WEEKEND)

GAME OF THE WEEKEND

BOYS — FLOYD CENTRAL AT NEW ALBANY, TONIGHT

• Time: 7:30.

• Records: Floyd Central 1-1 (0-0 Hoosier Hills Conference), New Albany 1-2 (0-1 HHC).

• Last year: regular-season meeting — New Albany 58, at Floyd Central 57, OT; Class 4A Seymour Sectional — New Albany 67, Floyd Central 57.

• Outlook: Jim Shannon has been coaching basketball a long time. It’s hard to imagine many of his teams have lost two games in a season — much less the same weekend — as they did last weekend. The Bulldogs led East 20-9 at the end of the first quarter before losing last Friday, then they had a 10-point lead after three quarters before Class 4A No. 7 Evansville Harrison came back to beat them. Let’s hope this isn’t a pattern. This New Albany team has too much experience to lose to the rival Highlanders. Of course, I thought that the Bulldogs had too much experience to blow two double-digit leads, as well.

Greg’s Pick: New Albany 68, Floyd Central 60.

FRIDAY

BOYS — SEYMOUR AT JEFFERSONVILLE

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Seymour 0-3 (0-0 HHC), Jeffersonville 1-0 (0-0 HHC).

• AP Rankings: Jeffersonville No. 16 (Class 4A)

• Last year: regular-season meeting — Jeffersonville 95, at Seymour 40; Class 4A Seymour Sectional — Jeff 73, Seymour 46.

• Outlook: Seymour coach Scott Miller is a great guy and he is honestly a good coach. I saw some of his teams at Fairfield and at Seymour and they were well-coached teams. But his Owls are certainly undermanned.

• Greg’s Pick: Jeffersonville 88, Seymour 45.

BOYS — CHARLESTOWN AT CLARKSVILLE

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Charlestown 2-0 (1-0 Mid-Southern Conference), Clarksville 3-0 (1-0 MSC).

• AP Rankings: Clarksville No. 5 (Class 2A)

• Last year: regular-season meeting — Clarksville 56, at Charlestown 47; Silver Creek Holiday Tournament — Clarksville 60, Charlestown 42.

• Outlook: If Charlestown was at home, I might be tempted to take the upset.

• Greg’s Pick: Clarksville 72, Charlestown 61.

BOYS — SILVER CREEK AT NORTH HARRISON

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Silver Creek 1-2 (0-1 MSC), North Harrison 1-2 (0-1 MSC).

• Last year: At Silver Creek 69, North Harrison 49.

• Outlook: At this point, it’s hard to know what to think of Silver Creek. I do, however, think the Dragons are better than North Harrison.

• Greg’s Pick: Silver Creek 66, North Harrison 59.

BOYS — ROCK CREEK ACADEMY AT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Rock Creek 3-2, Christian Academy 3-1.

• Last year: Christian Academy 62, at Rock Creek 42.

• Outlook: Christian Academy can score and rebound. That alone should give the Warriors a chance to win most of the games on their schedule.

• Greg’s Pick: Christian Academy 68, Rock Creek 50.

BOYS — SOUTH CENTRAL AT BORDEN

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: South Central 2-1 (0-0 Southern Athletic Conference), Borden 3-0 (1-0 SAC).

• AP Rankings: Borden No. 6 (Class A).

• Last year: regular-season meeting Borden 76, at South Central 65; Class A Borden Sectional — Borden 71, South Central 51.

• Outlook: South Central is improved, but not enough to stick with the Braves.

• Greg’s Pick: Borden 73, South Central 57.

GIRLS — PROVIDENCE AT HENRYVILLE

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Providence 5-3, Henryville 3-6.

• Last year: regular-season meeting — At Providence 49, Henryville 31; Class 2A Eastern Sectional — Providence 40, Henryville 31.

• Outlook: Providence should continue to make a push for its first winning season in a decade.

• Greg’s Pick: Providence 48, Henryville 39.

SATURDAY

BOYS — CORYDON CENTRAL AT NEW ALBANY

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Corydon Central 2-0, New Albany 1-2.

• Last year: New Albany 68, at Corydon Central 50.

• Outlook: Corydon’s last four trips into The Doghouse have not gone well. The closest of the four was 30 points. This one will be closer, but not close enough.

• Greg’s Pick: New Albany 69, Corydon Central 56.

BOYS — JEFFERSONVILLE AT MADISON

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Jeffersonville 1-0 (0-0 Hoosier Hills Conference); Madison 1-2 (0-1 HHC).

• AP Rankings: Jeffersonville No. 16 (Class 4A).

• Last year: At Jeffersonville 78, Madison 44.

• Outlook: The Red Devils will get off to a great start in defending their HHC title.

• Greg’s Pick: Jeffersonville 81, Madison 58.

BOYS — CLARKSVILLE AT EASTERN

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Clarksville 3-0 (1-0 Mid-Southern Conference); Eastern 1-2 (0-1 MSC).

• AP Rankings: Clarksville No. 5 (Class 2A).

• Last year: At Clarksville 66, Eastern 44.

• Outlook: If the Musketeer shooters are on, they have the ability to keep this close. Clarksville should find a way to prevail either way.

• Greg’s Pick: Clarksville 75, Eastern 66.

BOYS — PROVIDENCE AT SCOTTSBURG

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Providence 3-0, Scottsburg 1-2.

• AP Rankings: Providence No. 12 (Class 2A).

• Last year: At Providence 70, Scottsburg 38.

• Outlook: Scottsburg looks like its a lot better than last year, but Providence may be as well.

• Greg’s Pick: Providence 64, Scottsburg 38.

BOYS — CHRISTIAN ACADEMY AT PAOLI

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Christian Academy 3-1, Paoli 2-1.

• Last year: Paoli 49, at Christian Academy 43.

• Outlook: This is one of those games that should tell us how far the Warriors have come since last season.

• Greg’s Pick: Christian Academy 60, Paoli 58.

GIRLS — JENNINGS COUNTY AT NEW ALBANY

• Time: 1:30 p.m.

• Records: Jennings County 4-3 (1-1 HHC); New Albany 3-2 (0-1 HHC).

• Last year: New Albany 73, at Jennings County 37.

• Outlook: It will be nice for the Bulldogs to get home.

• Greg’s Pick: New Albany 58, Jennings County 53.

GIRLS — SILVER CREEK AT CHARLESTOWN

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Silver Creek 4-2 (2-1 MSC); Charlestown 2-4 (0-3 MSC).

• Last year: regular-season meeting — at Silver Creek 33, Charlestown 27; Charlestown Holiday Tournament — Silver Creek 38, Charlestown 30.

• Outlook: Last year, the two teams combined for 60 points. Another defensive battle is predictable.

• Greg’s Pick: Silver Creek 46, Charlestown 31.

GIRLS — NORTH HARRISON AT FLOYD CENTRAL

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: North Harrison 3-6, Floyd Central 4-2.

• Last year: Floyd Central 70, at North Harrison 57.

• Outlook: I’m starting to think the Highlanders are quite good. They have three or four players who can really put the ball in the basket.

• Greg’s Pick: Floyd Central 68, North Harrison 53.
