DISTRICT 5 TOURNAMENT: HYR 9-10s start tourney with blowout

All-Stars roll past Jeff/GRC, 11-1

CLARKSVILLE — Monday night was opening night for pool play of the District 5 All-Star Little League tournaments at Clarksville Little League.

Two of the teams taking the field first was the 9-10-year-old baseball All-Stars from Highlander Youth Recreation Little League and Jeff/GRC Little League.

HYR got its tournament off to a good start with an 11-1 win over Jeff/GRC in five innings.

HYR got great production from the top part of the lineup, with its Nos. 1-4 hitters combining to score nine of its 11 runs.

Garren Jenkins led the way for HYR with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Brady Harvey went 2-for-3 and drew a walk while also scoring three runs. Teammate Josh Weiser was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored.

HYR starter Max Tripure got the victory on the mound, pitching three scoreless innings. Harvey threw the final two frames in relief.

HYR broke a scoreless tie in the third with five runs. It tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 8-0.

“They played well,” HYR assistant coach David Weiser said about his players. “It’s a good start to the tournament.”

Alex Kelley was solid at the dish for Jeff. He reached base all three times, going 2-for-2 with a walk. Ethen Fox and Alex Wright were both 1-for-2 with a walk and each scored a run. Wright also had an RBI. Wright got the loss on the hill.

“We kept it close for three innings. Our pitcher Alex Wright hit his spots and we made the plays behind him,” Jeff manager Rick Kelley said. “But they scored five runs and that opened up the floodgates for them.”

Both teams will play on Saturday. HYR will face Charlestown at 8 p.m. Jeff/GRC will play Clarksville at 5:30 p.m.
