VOLLEYBALL: Pioneers roll past New Albany

Libs spikes 12 kills to learn No. 1 Providence past Bulldogs in three

NEW ALBANY — The Providence volleyball team kept on rolling on Tuesday night at The Doghouse.

Haley Libs spiked 12 kills and made seven digs to lead the Class 2A No. 1 Pioneers to a 25-21, 25-10, 25-10 win over archrival New Albany. Teammate Taylor Wilson played a key role in the Providence attack as well with nine kills and three blocks.

Pioneers’ setter Patricia Mattingly set up her hitters well with 32 assists and nine digs. She also was effective with her serve, delivering 11 service points.

Also for the Pioneers (23-4), Jacquie Hornung hit seven kills, Carlie Combs smacked five kills and Audrey Shannon had 15 digs and four assists.

“In the first set, New Albany played well and we really had to work,” Providence coach Terri Purichia said. “We picked it up in the second set by serving aggressively, and they got frustrated. Patricia played her best game of the season. She mixed up the offense very well, and that was the turning point.”

The Bulldogs (10-15) had three players with at least six kills. Audrey Donastorg led the New Albany hitters with eight kills and teammates Alexis Lete and Brook McCoy each had six.

Bulldog setters Sadie Meyer and Lindsey Harper made 11 and seven assists, respectively. On defense for New Albany, Madison Dibble had nine digs and Madison Almon made eight.

“We competed and played well in one game,” Bulldogs’ coach John Breeding said “We’re just not consistent and we have a difficult time staying focused.”

Breeding gave high marks on the Pioneers.

“They play well together. They have great chemistry,” Breeding said. “They have an excellent chance to win the state championship in Class 2A this season. They’re well-coached.”

Providence will host Louisville Butler tonight. New Albany will visit Silver Creek on Thursday. It will be a “Pink Out” match for cancer awareness.
