COLLEGE BASKETBALL: IU Southeast men, women win on Saturday

Grenadier women smash scoring record in Friday’s 148-101 win

NEW ALBANY — Ashmere Woods led all scorers with 31 points as the Grenadiers defeated Mid-Continent 92-82 for their third-straight win.

Woods was five of five from behind the arc and 11 of 13 from the field.

Heather Wheat added 18 points and Megan Cureton had 13.  Kortney Woods and Danielle Betts each had 10 points for IU Southeast.

Stephanie Malone had 28 points and 16 rebounds for Mid-Continent.

IU Southeast (3-1) shot 43 percent from the field in the game.

IU Southeast heads to Purdue Calumet next Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff.

On Friday, the IU Southeast women set a new single-game scoring record among other offensive marks, in a 148-101 win over St. Mary-of-the-Woods Friday night.

The 249 combined points scored ties an NAIA women’s basketball single-game record, according to the NAIA’s website. Olivet Nazarene (Ill.)and Robert Morris (Ill.) combined to 249 points on Feb. 24, 2007.

The 148 points scored by IU Southeast is the second-most in NAIA women’s basketball history as well.

Six Grenadiers scored in double-figures with Woods leading the way with 28 points.  Briana Palmer had 26 points, Wheat had 21, Koortney Woods had 17, Betts had 11 points in her home debut and Cureton had 10 points. Every Grenadier scored at least five points in the game.

The sixth-ranked IU Southeast men’s basketball team secured another close win 76-74 over Mid-Continent on Saturday.

The story of the game was the bench scoring for both teams. IU Southeast outscored Mid-Continent 24-8.  Tyrell Means scored 14 points off the bench, including a key three-point play late in the second half to keep the lead out of reach.

Jake Simpson led the Grenadiers with 17 points.  Kegan Clark had a solid game with 12 points and seven rebounds. Cameron Mitchell had 15 points.

Charles Peden had 20 points and nine rebounds for Mid-Continent. The Grenadiers (3-2) forced 20 Cougar turnovers in the win.

IU Southeast heads to Ohio to face Miami-Middletown on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
