H.S. BOYS' BASKETBALL: Generals shoot lights out in 77-47 win over Creek

SELLERSBURG — It’s sure nice when the ball goes in.

And for Clarksville on Friday, it did. With great frequency.

Add a little defense and grab a rebound here and there and what you have is a 77-47 victory for the Generals over the Silver Creek Dragons.

It was the Mid-Southern Conference opener for both teams.

Hitting at a 66 percent clip (10-of-15) in the first half and adding 12-of-16 free throws, the Generals built a 35-18 halftime lead.

Two 3-pointers by Calvin McEwen and four points by Austin Johnson paced Clarksville to a 12-3 run to open the second half. The lead first reached 30 at 64-34 on a trey by Jermargio Smith with six minutes left.

Getting off to a quick start seems to be normal for the Generals in this early part of the season.

“The quick start means everything,” said Clarksville coach Jason Connell. “We shot the ball well, we took good shots. Our defense was good, we came up with a lot of loose balls.

“We have some experience with three starters back, plus we have Andrew Jones who transferred in. And these guys really play unselfish. Some of them you have to tell to shoot. That can be a good thing at times.”

Calvin McEwen led Clarksville with 21 points, incuding five 3-pointers. Aidan McEwen added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Three Generals each finished with 8 points.

Zach Davidson had 14 points and Gabe Bauer added 11 for the Dragons, but all in all, it was a long night for Silver Creek coach Brandon Hoffman.

“Their quick start was a lot due to our lack of poise,” Hoffman said. “And this was the first big game for a lot of these guys. We shot the ball well in our opener, but we picked a horrible night not to make shots. We took quick shots and we took nervous shots. They really took us to the woodshed.

“They’ve got a lot of weapons There isn’t anyone on that team that you can’t guard. Aidan McEwen just has a great knack for scoring.”

Silver Creek won’t have long to think about this one as they travel to Floyd Central tonight. Clarksville will resume action next Friday when they host Charlestown for another MSC showdown.

“We’re going to take this loss hopefully as learning how to win,” Hoffman said. “We’ve got a big game tomorrow.”

“Our guys were excited tonight,” said Connell. “It’s the start of the new season and we wanted to come out and play well.”
