HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: NA, Jeff split in rivalry swim meet

Bulldog girls, Red Devil boys win in rivalry meet

JEFFERSONVILLE — The New Albany girls’ swimming team and the Jeffersonville boys’ swimming team each came out on top in their respective dual meets as both rival schools squared off on Thursday night at the Jeff High Natatorium.

The Bulldog girls’ team ousted the Red Devils, 104-82. Seniors Hannah Manger and Rachel Klein and freshman Reagan Thom each contributed four victories for the Bulldogs.

Manger won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke along with being a part of the victories 200 freestyle relay team. Thom placed first in the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, while teaming up with Klein, Alexis Lete and Lauren McCool to win the 200 medley relay. Klein won the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Manger, Thom and Klein were on the winning 400 free relay squad along with senior Shelby Renner. McCool won the 500 freestyle. McCool, Lete and Renner were on the first-place 200 free relay team.

Jeff had two first-place finishes, which were senior Alexa Waldrip in diving and junior Karlee Demsey in the 100 butterfly.

“I was very pleased with our performances tonight,” Jeff swim coach Keith Gast said. “We had been feeling pretty good about our girls’ team this fall, thinking we were a lot better than the past few seasons, and New Albany came in and showed us we still have some ground to cover.”

In the boys’ meet, the Red Devils won all 12 events to down the Bulldogs, 151-33.

Jeff’s T Martin and Evan Shive each picked up four blue ribbons. Martin won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle while helping the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams prevail.

Shive was first in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and joined Martin on the victorious 200 medley and 400 free relay squads. Junior Karol Schmuck and Zak Griffis swam on the 400 free relay team, while Max Weidekamp and Alec McAtee were on the 200 medley relay squad.

Schmuck won the 50 and 100 freestyles. Jeff senior Damian Hazel finished first in diving, Red Devil junior Zach Daily won the 100 breaststroke and Evan Lopez prevailed in the 200 freestyle.

Daily, Lopez, senior Lucas Hennegan and freshman Cameron Simcoe made up Jeff’s victorious 200 free relay squad.

“Tonight was a good meet for the guys,” Gast said. “We had a lot of internal team races, trying to figure out the best places to race everybody. Across the board, our guys are swimming quick and having fun racing.”

Senior Luke Lete posted the best finishes for New Albany. He placed second in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
