Hawkins named football coach at Silver Creek

Henryville hires Hill as boys’ basketball coach

SELLERSBURG — The West Clark school board unanimously approved Jason Hawkins to take over as the Silver Creek varsity football head coach on Thursday.

The former Clarksville star and assistant coach and Charlestown head coach was selected to replace Mike Donahue, who had a 7-25 record in the program’s first four years of varsity football.

“We’re excited to have Jason and we think Jason is excited to come to Silver Creek,” Silver Creek athletic director Larry Richmer said Thursday. “He’s a proven winner. We’re looking forward to bigger and better things from our football program.”

Hawkins declined to comment on his new position, which includes a physical education and health position at Silver Creek High School, until he meets with the Charlestown football team on Friday morning.

Hawkins accrued a 62-26 record in eight years at Charlestown, including the program’s fourth sectional championship in 2012. In 2013, the Pirates went 8-4 despite losing nearly their entire offense and some key defensive players from the 2012 team that scored 720 points against 79 surrendered before a stunning 57-49 loss to Gibson Southern in the Class 3A regional.

Hawkins is the son of legendary Clarksville coach Dennis Hawkins, who led the Generals to the Class 2A state championship game in 1997. Jason Hawkins’ Dragons will face Charlestown on Sept. 19 and his alma mater Clarksville the following week.

Also at Thursday’s school board meeting, Jared Hill was named Henryville’s new head boys’ basketball coach. Hill was a Hornets assistant under Perry Hunter and Dan Carmony, who recently resigned the position after going 3-38 over the past two seasons.

Hill, who is the brother of Henryville volleyball coach Shallon Hill, is currently the Hornets’ head baseball coach.

He is a seventh-grade geography, ninth-grade English and speech/creative writing teacher at Henryville.
