Pioneers get by Commodores, 4-3



Paige Schindler went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple and was the winning pitcher as Borden knocked off West Washington, 5-4 on Monday.

Schindler had 18 strikeouts in the victory.

The Braves had plenty of offensive stars. Riley Schindler went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles, Taylor Streander and McKency Terflinger each went 2 for 3 in the victory.



Providence opened its 2014 campaign with a tough 2-1 loss to Wheaton North (Ill.) in the Derby City Classic at Louisville Southern on Monday.

Ryan Mueller pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed two unearned runs. Jacob Quinkert and Jake Lewis had two hits apiece and Parker Graf hit a double in the loss.

“It was a contest where we came out and competed against a very good ball club and just came out a little short,” Providence coach Scott Hornung said.

The Pioneers face Oldham County at 5:30 p.m. today in the second round of the Derby Classic.
