New Albany grad Hale to transfer from Purdue

Painter says ex-NA star headed to Bellarmine to be closer to home, get more playing time

WEST LAFAYETTE — According to several sources, Purdue announced Friday morning that former New Albany star Donnie Hale was given permission by Boilermaker men’s basketball head coach Matt Painter to transfer immediately.

Hoosier Hills Hoops’ Matt Denison reported Friday evening that Hale will transfer to Bellarmine.

Hale averaged 3.8 points and 2.8 rebounds in 14.5 minutes per game a year ago as a redshirt freshman. He led the Boilermakers in scoring and rebounding twice apiece, including a 15-point performance on 7-of-12 shooting in a season-opening loss to Bucknell. He scored 12 points in an overtime win over Iowa and had 11 points and five boards in an overtime loss to Villanova at Madison Square Garden.

Painter said in a statement released by Purdue on Friday that Hale has a few reasons for transferring.

“Donnie has expressed his intent to transfer to be closer to home and for his desire for more playing time,” Painter said in the statement. “We thank him for his hard work and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

Hale has already sat out two years after going to Bridgton Academy in Maine, where he was named Class AAA NEPSAC All-New England while averaging 15 points and 10 boards, in 2010-11 and redshirting for Painter’s squad in 2011-12.

Hale averaged 18 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.3 blocks during his senior year and helped lead the Bulldogs to four straight Hoosier Hills Conference titles. He averaged 19.7 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks as a junior. Hale was named All-State by the Associated Press after each season.

New Albany went 89-9 and won a pair of sectionals with Hale on its roster.
