TUESDAY HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Henryville girls, Borden boys win SAC

Hornets boys, Brave girls finish runner-up

LANESVILLE —  Henryville recieved a strong outing from its cross country teams on Tuesday as its girls won the Southern Athletic Conference championship and the boys finished second at Lanesville.

The girls were again lead by Sadie Spears, who was the overall individual SAC champion, and freshman Cia Greene, who finished in second. The Hornets had three finish in the top 10 as they squeaked by Borden by eight points.

Greene finished with a time of 20:41 finishing just one second behind race winner Spears, giving Henryvile a strong 1-2 punch in the event. Henryville’s third runner was Megan O’Lone, who finished 8th, to give Henryville the finish they needed.

“I thought our girls would probably win if our third and fourth runners came out to compete,” Henryville coach Brad Nifong said. “Spears and Greene are typically leading the pack and the rest supported their efforts today.”

The Henryville boys also ran a good race, finishing second behind powerhouse Borden. Henryville recieved two top-10 finishers with Jacob Hedrick (17:11) and Zack Knox 17:18, who came in second and third, respectively.

Borden had four runners finish in the top six, which made the Braves unbeatable. Borden sophomore Julien Magallanes was the SAC champion in 16:46 — 25 seconds ahead of runner-up Hedrick.

“It’s always a great feeling to win a conference title and I am proud of our boys’ success,” Borden coach Liz Carmony said.

“Knox put together his best run of the year and Hedrick simply did what he needed to do in the last mile to claim his spot behind Magallanes,” Nifing said. “We had two [personal records] out of our top-five boys today, so I’m looking forward to putting together a similar performance in the sectional next week.”
