ROUNDUP: Floyd defeats rival New Albany in girls’ tennis

Silver Creek still on top of MSC

FLOYDS KNOBS —  Floyd Central’s girls’ doubles teams dropped just three games to help the 10th-ranked Highlanders defeat rival New Albany 4-1 on Tuesday.

Floyd Central’s Whitney Batliner and Dana Frank won all six games in the opening set before beating Emily and Lauren Hoffer 6-1 in the second at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Erin Patterson and Alex Jamsion beat the Bulldogs’ Anne Mattox and Racquel Burch 6-1 in each set.

Highlander standout Olivia Boesing won with similar ease, 6-0, 6-1 over Erin Kanii at No. 1 singles, while Floyd Central’s Christine McCafferey topped Rachel Johnson 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

New Albany’s win came at No. 2 singles where Marin Kanii beat the Highlanders’ Alexis Applegate in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1.

The Highlanders will be back in action Thursday in Louisville against Sacred Heart Academy. On that same night, New Albany will host North Harrison.

• Creek still on top of MSC: Silver Creek won a Mid-Southern Conference match for the second straight night on Tuesday, beating Charlestown 4-1.

The Dragons’ Kat Hebble and Rebekah Knittle each won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Charlestown’s lone win came from the No. 2 doubles team of Hayley Trinkle and Erica Broady, who beat Gabby Dunn and Katy Hawkins, 6-3, 6-2.

NEXT: Charlestown hosts Clarksville, tonight; Silver Creek at Corydon Central, Thursday.

BOYS’ GOLF

• Highlanders beat Providence:
No. 3 Floyd Central edged No. 13 Providence 154-160 in a match between the area’s top two teams at Covered Bridge Golf Club on Tuesday.

The Highlanders’ Connor Welch led all golfers with a 37 for medalist honors. He beat teammate Daniel Shepard and Providence’s Kevin Crone by a stroke.

Devin Jenkins shot a 39 and Jack Sparrow a 40 for the Highlanders. Mitchell Allender added a 40 for the Pioneers, followed closely by teammates Cory Cahalan and Robert Waiz, who each shot a 41.

NEXT: Providence and Columbus North at Jennings County (St. Anne’s), tonight; Floyd Central at Warsaw Tiger Invitational (Stonehenge), Saturday.
