Silver Creek’s football team ran into a balanced and productive Brownstown Central offense on Friday night, but even the final score, 49-13 in favor of Brownstown, couldn’t mask a solid effort by the Dragons.
“I thought we played really well offensively,” Silver Creek head coach Mike Donahue said. “Our offensive line played its best game ever. I thought the team as a whole put in a great effort.”
Silver Creek forced three fumbles from Brownstown’s hands and had the game tied at 7 after the first quarter. Unfortunately for the Dragons, Brownstown quarterback Clay Brown’s record-setting night put a win over the Braves out of reach.
Brown threw for 290 yards and five touchdowns — both school records — on an efficient 18-for-23 passing night.
Overall, Brownstown’s offense generated 627 yards, 337 on the ground and 290 in the air. The Braves generated five touchdowns plays of 27 or more yards, two of which were greater than 70 yards.
Silver Creek countered with 251 total yards, 92 rushing and 159 passing.
“They run their offense like a machine,” Donahue said. “It’s been a machine every year we’ve played them.”
Brownstown got on the scoreboard first when Brown connected with Kyle Jensen on an 85-yard touchdown pass three minutes into the first quarter.
Silver Creek responded, however, when Shawn Pezzullo recovered a Brownstown fumble at the Braves’ 42 yard line. SC quarterback Brooks Howell found Cameron Cook moments later for a 13-yard TD pass that tied the game at seven.
Brownstown pulled away thereafter, scoring 42 unanswered points to secure the victory.
A Howell-to-Austin Hasting touchdown pass with 3:17 left in the game closed out Silver Creek’s scoring.
Howell finished with 159 yards and two TDs on 15-for-25 passing. Bobby Haines was the Dragons’ leading rusher with 60 yards on 17 carries.
Defensively, Silver Creek got fumble recoveries from Pezzullo, Gabe White and Myles Hardy.
Punter Drew Sherrow had a busy night that included a 50-yard punt that settled on the Brownstown 9.
Silver Creek’s record fell to 3-5 on the season and 2-5 in the Mid Southern Conference. The Dragon end their regular season with a trip to Lawrenceburg (6-2) next Friday.
