SCOTTSBURG — Floyd Central outplayed Scottsburg in most aspects of the Highlanders’ 60-51 loss at Meyer Gym on Thursday.

The Highlanders shot 56 percent from the floor, out-rebounded Scottsburg 34-21 and assisted on 11 of their 18 baskets. Unfortunately, 32 turnovers gave them almost no chance against the experienced Warriorettes.

“We had 32 turnovers and we were in the game until the last couple minutes,” Floyd senior Brooke Hinton said. “Maybe if we were smarter, we could’ve won the game.”

“We didn’t take care of the ball ... we didn’t value the ball like we needed to,” Highlander coach Kirk Hamsley said.

Floyd Central (1-1) had an astonishing 15 turnovers in the first quarter alone. Most of them were what Hamsley called, “Self-inflicted turnovers.”

“Honestly, the pressure wasn’t anything special,” Hinton said. “It was pressure we put on ourselves. It’s definitely a lesson we’ll learn. We have to take care of the basketball. That’s something we have to practice on.”

While many of the errors were unforced, Scottsburg Hall of Fame coach Donna Cheatham said she was proud of her team, which finished with 17 steals.

“[In a loss to Triton Central earlier this week], we played good defense in the first half and fell asleep in the second half,” Cheatham said. “What we’re trying to do is play full games.”

The game was close for the first four minutes with Scottsburg leading 7-5. But turnovers led to a 9-1 run over the final four minutes and the Warriorettes led 16-6 after one quarter.

Floyd responded with a 13-7 run early in the second quarter, capped by a Brianna Roth three-point play and a Hinton shot from behind the 3-point line. However, a half-court shot by Kelsey Smith, who had 13 first-half points, at the buzzer gave the Warriorettes a 34-21 lead at the break.

The Highlanders dominated the third quarter and got within 38-33 on a Riley Kaiser bucket. But again, Scottsburg (2-1) responded with a 5-2 run to close the period to get the lead back up to 45-35 heading into the final stanza.

Floyd had one last run in it. A Roth bucket on a Kaiser assist ended a 17-7 run and got the Highlanders within 52-48 with 2:10 remaining in regulation.

“We did a nice job of fighting back,” Hamsley said.

However, three straight turnovers and 11 fourth-quarter trips to the foul line allowed Scottsburg to close on an 8-3 run.

“We had five possessions in a row where we didn’t score,” Hamsley said of the final two minutes. “If we score three times, we’re down to two points. We have some work to do.”

Hinton led the Highlanders with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from the 3-point stripe. Riley Kaiser added 12 points, Madison Kaiser had five points and team-highs with four assists and three steals and Roth had a six-point, 11-rebound, two-block performance.

Smith led all scorers with 19 points but had only one field goal in the second half. Ashley Elliott had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and also finished with five assists and five steals for the Warriorettes. Scottsburg’s Jillian Romero had 13 points and five steals.

The Highlanders will continue their three-game road trip next Tuesday when they go to Seymour to face the 4-0 Owls.
