SELLERSBURG — The Mike Warren era of Jeffersonville High School boys’ basketball has begun with flying covers.

On Friday night at Silver Creek High School, the first-year head coach guided the Red Devils to their first 3-0 start since the 2011 Class 4A state champions with a 50-32 victory over the host Dragons.

“It feels good. For them, it helps them build confidence and a winning attitude,” Warren said about his players’ 3-0 start. “There’s no doubt about that, but we’re going to start finding out in the next couple of weeks where we stand. It’s great to start 3-0. But by Jan. 1, we’ll know where we stand.”

Turnovers were the key statistic on the night. The Red Devils’ defensive pressure forced Silver Creek (0-2) into 21 turnovers. Thirteen of the Dragons’ miscues came in the first half, as Jeff built a 26-9 halftime lead.

Silver Creek coach Scott Schoen said the Red Devils’ quickness was too much for the Dragons to handle.

“It’s something you can’t really mimic in practice and we knew they were going to get up into us,” Schoen said. “They just overwhelm you at times. They come in waves. We talked about that and tried to mimic in practice. We talked about if you handle the pressure, it will allow you to get good looks. But it’s different with me talking about it than really seeing it.”

After Jeff led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter, the Devils made the game a blowout in the second period.

Jeff outscored Creek in the second stanza, 17-2 to take the 17-point intermission lead. In the quarter, the Dragons made six turnovers and misfired on six of seven field-goal attempts.

“We started a little bit slow, but we had a really nice second quarter,” Warren said. “I’ve got three quick guards and we’re going to use them to the best of our ability and that’s what we’re going to do to people.”

Senior center Haley Vogen was the Red Devils’ leading scorer with a game-high 13 points, tallying 11 in the second half. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Jeff sophomore guard Taylor Sykes scored all of her 11 points in the opening half. Red Devil senior guard Aureeshae Hines poured in eight points along with two steals.

Jeff will face its toughest test to date tonight when it travels to defending Class 4A state champion and top-ranked Bedford North Lawrence (2-0). Former Bedford and Indiana University star Damon Bailey, who is the all-time leading boys’ scorer in Indiana high school basketball history, is the head coach of the Stars.

“We’re going to have our hands full. I think we can match up with them,” Warren said. “Their skill level is second to none when it comes to the state of Indiana. But I think we’ll be able to go up there and compete with them.”

Junior Kelsi Scott was the only Dragon to score in double figures with 12 points. She completed a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds. Teammate Bailee Popp tallied six points.

Silver Creek will visit North Harrison on Wednesday.
