H.S. ROUNDUP: Bulldogs take down No. 1 Jasper

Charlestown, Borden split doubleheader

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Brandon Johnson pitched a complete-game, five-hit shutout as New Albany defeated Class 3A No. 1 Jasper 1-0 on Saturday.

Johnson allowed seven baserunners but no Wildcats were able to cross the plate. Johnson also had 10 strikeouts as New Albany improved to 9-1 on the season. Johnson is now 4-0 on the season.

“Brandon was really locked in today on the mound,” New Albany coach Chris McIntyre said. “Very proud of his effort. We made some nice plays defensively behind him."

Johnson got the only run of support he needed in the third. Noah Smith led off the frame with a single off Jasper (7-3) starter Cal Krueger. After he went to second on a balk, Jarius McClure bunted him over to third. He scored the game’s only run on a Tucker Marcum ground ball.

Smith’s single was the Bulldogs’ only hit of the afternoon.

"It was a good, well played baseball game,” McIntyre said. “We were fortunate to scratch out an early run against them. Their guy on the mound was really good. We hit some balls hard but could never get anything going.”

New Albany hosts Pleasure Ridge Park (Ky.) today.
