PRO SOCCER: Estopinal trying to bring pro soccer to Louisville

Jeffersonville architect has plans to give River City USL franchise

(Continued)

JEFFERSONVILLE — IN GOOD COMPANY

The proposed Louisville USL Pro franchise would compete with teams from some of the larger cities in the United States. It is an intriguing mixture of regions, with squads from cities like Harrisburg, PA going up against clubs from Los Angeles and Pittsburgh.

The current USL Pro teams:

• Charleston Battery

• Charlotte Eagles

• Richmond Kickers

• Rochester Rhinos

• Wilmington Hammerheads

• Harrisburg City Islanders

• Pittsburgh Riverhounds

• Orlando City Soccer Club (moving up to MLS)

• Dayton Dutch Lions

• Los Angeles Blues

• Phoenix FC Wolves

• Sacramento Republic

• LA Galaxy II (the first USL team founded by an MLS franchise)

• Oklahoma City Energy

BY THE NUMBERS

• 1,200 — Number of local fans who have pledged to purchase a season-ticket package for the Louisville USL team.

• 21,000 — The amount of fans who packed into the Citrus Bowl to see Orlando City compete for the USL championship last September. The figure was a big factor in Orlando City getting approved to join MLS.

• 2 million — Wayne Estopinal’s rough estimate of the Louisville-based soccer club’s yearly budget. “Are we going to make a bunch of money? No. We may struggle to make a profit, and we might end up continuing to put money into it. But that’s what it takes to get established,” he said.
