RUNNERS UNITE: Five local running stores come together to support Boston

LOUISVILLE — On Monday, the owners of five running stores, including Pacers and Racers, organized a run to honor the victims and the responders to last week’s Boston Marathon attack.

Joining New Albany’s Pacers and Racers was four Louisville stores — Blue Mile, Fleet Feet, Swag’s and Ken Combs — in a run from the five stores to Hogan’s Fountain in Cherokee Park.

“We wanted to demonstrate to the community that even thogh we’re five competing business, there is a bigger picture,” said Pacers and Racers owner Mike Stallings, a Floyds Knobs resident and a Boston Marathon veteran. “It wasn’t about us. It was about the memory of of all of those people — our running comrades, their loved ones, the fallen [MIT] police officer [Sean Collier] and those who helped.”

The run helped raise what Stallings estimated to be “in excess of $10,000” for One Fund Boston, which has raised more than $2 million in the past week.

After the run and an “emotional” moment of silence at Cherokee Park, the estimated 300 runners met at Flanagan’s Ale House.

“We believe our mission was a success,” said Stallings, who said he’s hopeful the run turns into an annual event.
