HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Silver Creek softball rallies past Corydon

Mattingly lifts Dragons to 4-3 win

SELLERSBURG — Every kid dreams about it. Two outs, bottom of the last inning, In a tie game with the bases loaded and a full count against a rival team.

Silver Creek’s Hannah Mattingly was that kid Tuesday. With Silver Creek and Corydon deadlocked at three, Mattingly delivered the game-winning hit, lifting the Dragons over the Panthers, 4-3.

Silver Creek entered the seventh inning trailing Corydon 2-1. After surrendering another Panther run, Silver Creek took its last at-bat with a two-run deficit.

The Dragons rallied for three runs capped off by Mattingly’s heroics.

“Hannah has been swinging the bat well,” Dragon coach Dave Harvey said. “She battled in that last at-bat and fouled off a couple of pitcher before getting the hit.”

Silver Creek was paced by a solid outing from starting pitcher Shayla Cravens.

“I can’t say enough about Shayla,” said Harvey. “She made one bad pitch on the first inning home run. After that she settled down and was really good the rest of the game.”

Cravens pitched all seven innings giving up the three runs on seven hits. She struck out eight and didn’t walk a single batter.

Mattingly finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Olivia Scarbrough was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Cravens went 2-for-3 and also had an RBI and run scored.

The win moves the Dragons to (5-4) and they will host Jeffersonville on Tuesday.
