GREG'S PICKS: Hayes, Warriors on a roll

(Continued)

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — GAMES TO WATCH — TUESDAY-THURSDAY

GAME OF THE WEEK

GIRLS — New Washington at Providence

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: New Washington 9-2, Providence 8-5.

• Rankings: New Washington No. 14 (Class A).

• Last year: At New Washington 53, Providence 47.

• Last 10 years: New Washington 9-2.

• Assessment: Looking at the sectional lineups, there aren’t likely to be many girls’ sectional champions from Clark or Floyd Counties. The New Wash can get by Borden, it should have a nice playoff run. The Mustangs have proven they can win slow scoring games or fast-pace games. They have beaten five teams from higher classes, including 3A Charlestown. They can shoot the ball and defend. They’re outscoring teams by 23 points per game. The one question mark is that New Wash hasn’t had a lot of tough road tests. Providence should provide that.

• Greg’s Pick: New Washington 60, Providence 44.

TUESDAY

BOYS — Charlestown at Rock Creek

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Charlestown 5-3, Rock Creek 5-8.

• Last year: At Charlestown 79, Rock Creek 63.

• Last 15 years: Charlestown 3-2.

• Assessment: It’s tempting to take the bigger, more athletic Lions at home. But Charlestown has two advantages in this game: Chris Braun and Aaron Daniel. Those two seniors are going to will the Pirates to a lot of hard-fought wins. They’re so tough. They were made for crunch time, as they proved with 44 combined points in a 70-63 win at Silver Creek and with 51 points and 18 boards in a 64-52 come-from-behind win over Seymour.

• Greg’s Pick: Charlestown 54, Rock Creek 49.

GIRLS — Silver Creek at Madison

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Silver Creek 11-4, Madison 11-2.

• Rankings: Madison No. 6 (Class 3A).

• Last year: Madison 65, at Silver Creek 57.

• Last 10 years: Madison 10-1.

• Assessment: Madison handed the Dragons one of their five losses last year and the Cubs may be better in 2013. As well as Silver Creek is playing, it’s hard to see the Dragons stealing one in Madison, which is coming off of its second loss of the year.

• Greg’s Pick: Madison 43, Silver Creek 38
