GREG'S PICKS: Hayes, Warriors on a roll

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — GIRLS — Eastern at Charlestown

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Eastern 7-7 (1-3 MSC); Charlestown 5-8 (5-8, 1-4)

• Last year: At Eastern 59, Charlestown 42.

• Last 10 years: Charlestown 9-4.

• Assessment: A couple weeks ago, I said the wins are going to start coming in bunches for the Pirates. They’ve won three of their last four, including wins over Jeffersonville and Brownstown. At home, they should handle the Musketeers.

• Greg’s Pick: Charlestown 55, Eastern 42.

GIRLS — New Albany at South Oldham (Ky.)

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: New Albany 6-7, South Oldham 3-11.

• Last year: South Oldham 55, at New Albany 40.

• Last 10 years: South Oldham 1-0.

• Assessment: The Dragons clearly aren’t as good as last year’s team and I like the way New Albany — and Tanner Marcum, in particular — is playing. A more aggressive Marcum could lead to a lot of wins for the Bulldogs in 2013.

• Greg’s Pick: New Albany 60, South Oldham 47.

GIRLS — Henryville at Southwestern

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Henryville 8-6, Southwestern 3-12.

• Last year: Southwestern 52, at Henryville 42.

• Last 10 years: Southwestern 4-0.

• Assessment: Southwestern is playing better than earlier in the season, but the Hornets are playing significantly better. It’s a close race for the area’s most improved team between Henryville and Charlestown.

• Greg’s Pick: Henryville 49, Southwestern 46.

GIRLS — Borden at Orleans

• Time: 7:30 p.m.

• Records: Borden 6-5, Orleans 6-5.

• Last year: At Borden 54, Orleans 41.

• Last 10 years: Orleans 7-3.

• Assessment: Both teams are giving up right around 40 points per game, so it’s going to be low scoring. This is a game that could go either way, but I’ll always take a Terry Rademacher-coached team in a game that’s expected to be close.

• Greg’s Pick: Borden 41, Orleans 36.

Tanner Marcum, New Albany

Marcum is clearly appears to be headed toward back-to-back Player of the Year honors. After scoring a career-high 38 points and going over 1,000 for her career in Thursday’s 68-57 loss to Madison, the Bulldog senior led her team to a 69-62 double-overtime victory over rival Floyd Central with 32 more. She scored 16 combined points in the two overtimes.

Team               Record    Last

1. New Washington    9-2    2

2. Silver Creek    11-4    3

3. New Albany    6-7    5

4. Floyd Central    8-6    1

5. Charlestown     5-8    7

6. Borden    6-5    4

7. Jeffersonville    5-9    6

8. Henryville    8-6    8

9. Providence    8-5    9

10. Clarksville    3-11    10

Note on the Power Poll: The poll isn’t based solely on which teams would beat which. Factors like team records and how they are expected to perform in their respective class sectional are also taken into account.
