H.S. SOFTBALL: Highlanders open up 4A sectional with Seymour

Pioneers, Hornets to square off in 2A sectional

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — The Floyd Central softball team will begin defense of its Class 4A sectional title at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 20 when it faces Seymour at Jeffersonville High School.

The Highlanders and the rest of the softball teams learned their sectional pairings on Thursday when the IHSAA conducted its blind draw for the 29th annual state tournament series at its headquarters.

Floyd Central (17-4) and Seymour will have a prelude game to its sectional matchup tonight at Floyd Central when they square off in the third-place game of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament.

The winner of the Highlanders-Owls first-round sectional game will play either the host Red Devils (13-7) or Bedford North Lawrence (12-12) in the first semifinal on Tuesday, May 21 at 6 p.m. Jeff and Bedford will face each other in the first round at about 7:30 p.m. on May 20.

New Albany (17-5) and Jennings County (16-5) each got first-round byes and will meet in the second semifinal on Tuesday, May 21 at about 7:30 p.m. The Panthers defeated the Bulldogs on Tuesday in the opening round of the HHC Tournament, 11-4.

The sectional championship game will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 23 at Jeff.

CLASS 3A SALEM SECTIONAL

Class 3A No. 5 Charlestown (16-3) got the only first-round bye in the sectional and will likely play Class 3A No. 6 Salem, which faces Scottsburg in the opening round, in the first semifinal on Wednesday, May 22 at 5:30 p.m. The host Lions (16-3) and the Warriorettes will square off in the sectional opener at 5:30 p.m. on May 20.

The Pirates might have an opportunity to avenge Wednesday’s 3-1 home loss to Salem in the sectional semis. The setback to the Lions denied Charlestown a chance to clinch a share of the Mid-Southern Conference championship.

Silver Creek will open sectional play at 5:30 p.m. on May 21 in a first-round contest versus Corydon Central. The second first-round game that day will pit Brownstown Central against North Harrison at about 7 p.m. The winners of both May 21 games will square off in the second semifinal at approximately 7 p.m. on May 22. The championship will take place at 6 p.m. on May 23.
