H.S. ROUNDUP: No. 1 Floyd goes 1-1, Jeff loses pair of one-run games

Pirates fall short in Charlestown Softball Invitational

(Continued)

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — SOFTBALL

• Pirates can’t hang on: The host Pirates led Brown County 3-0 heading into the last inning of the Charlestown Invitational championship game, but the Eagles scored five times in the seventh to sneak away with the trophy.

Alli Webster had an RBI double in the third inning and a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead. However, Brown County, who only had two hits through six innings, got five hits in the fifth off of Webster for the win.

“I thought we played pretty good,” Charlestown coach Kevin Zollman said. “We got the jump on them, but we’ve got to hit the ball better.”

In the first round, Charlestown blasted Crothersville 8-1. The Pirates had five hits by five different players and Carly Price improved to 3-0 in the pitching circle.

The Pirates will face the host Lions or Scottsburg in Wednesday’s first Salem Sectional semifinal.

• Jasper edges Clarksville: Clarksville pitcher Bailey Sharp was nearly perfect through seven innings but Jasper found a way to beat her 3-1 in seven innings.

The Wildcats’ only run in the first seven innings was unearned. She had two perfect innings and only faced four Jasper batters in four others.

“I thought she was pretty strong through seven innings,” Clarksville coach Tim Hauber said.

After the Generals tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings, Sharp walked three Wildcats and gave up a pair of singles.

Clarksville faces Paoli in Monday’s Eastern Sectional opening round.
