LITTLE LEAGUE SOFTBALL: Season ends for New Albany 11-12s

All-Stars fall to Riverfield, 8-1

LEBANON — The New Albany 11-12-year-old Softball All-Stars’ season came to an end on Monday in the Major League State Tournament, falling to Riverfield Little League of Anderson 8-1.

New Albany’s lone run came in the bottom of the first inning when it took its only lead of the game at 1-0. After Erin Bell led off the frame with a walk, she scored on a two-out single by Riley Case.

But Riverfield responded with two runs in the top of the second, three in the fourth and three in the fifth. New Albany ended the tournament with a 1-3 record in pool play, as it finished seventh.

New Albany collected only three hits, with Anya Davenport collecting two singles.

“We couldn’t put hits together. We had a lot of girls go 0-for-2 or 0-for-3,” New Albany coach Darrell Thomas said.

New Albany starting pitcher Bre Schoenfeld suffered the loss. She gave up five runs in four innings. New Albany’s Alexis Williams pitched the final two frames.

Despite Monday’s setback, Thomas praised the way his team played in the District 5 and state tournaments.

“They represented New Albany well,” he said.
