H.S. GIRLS' TRACK: Throwers lead local contingent at state

FC's Wolf seeded 11th in discus

BLOOMINGTON — All year, the top area performers in girls’ track and field have been in the shot put and the discus.

Of the four individuals participating in Saturday’s IHSAA girls’ track and field state finals on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, three of them are throwers.

Floyd Central senior Leah Wolf is the top seed of the Clark and Floyd County state finalists. She’s the 11th seed in the discus with a throw of 129 feet, 7 inches in last Tuesday’s Bloomington North Regional. Wolf will be joined in the discus throw by Henryville junior Natalie Uhl, who is the 15th seed after tossing the disc 128 feet at regional.

Charlestown junior Megan Brooks was the only local state qualifier in the shot put. Her heave of 39-6 gave her a spot in Saturday’s state finals and makes her the 16th seed in the event.

Floyd Central junior pole vaulter Rachel Kavgazoff cleared the bar at 10-3 at the regional to qualify for state. She is seeded 27th heading into the state meet.

Two relay teams also will participate in the state meet. New Albany’s 400-meter relay team is seeded 24th with a preliminary time of 50.36 seconds. Providence’s 1,600 relay is the No. 27 seed after running the event in 4:09.24 at the regional.

Other athletes of interest: Scottsburg senior Morgan McNeeley, who was the 100, 200 and 400 Mid-Southern Conference champion and is the 20th seed in the 400 on Saturday; North Harrison sophomore Ashton Bosler, who is seeded 26th in the 3,200; Jennings County sophomore Kerri Ertel is the third seed in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles.

Fort Wayne Wayne’s Brionna Thomas is the defending champion in the 100 and 200 and is the top seed in both events on Saturday. Eastern Greentown’s Bethany Neeley is the defending 1,600 champion and is seeded second in that event. Fort Wayne Concordia’s Symone Black is ranked first in both hurdles events.
