YOUTH BASEBALL: Dragons Baseball 13U wins national title

Southern Indiana team place first in Youth Nationals

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Last Thursday, the Southern Indiana-based Dragons Baseball 13U team won the 13-and-under baseball division at the 2014 Youth Baseball Nationals. The Dragons defeated Team Demarini from Georgia in the championship game, 12-0.

The Dragons began the tournament by going 5-0 in pool play. They defeated West Virginia, Team Demarini, East Cobb (Ga.),. the Cherokee Cobras from Georgia and the Turn 2 Tigers from North Carolina.

The Dragons advanced to the single-elimination portion of the tournament as the No. 1 seed. They beat the Hobgood Fury from Georgia in the quarterfinals (12-2), followed by a 13-1 trouncing of Carolina Teal from South Carolina in the semifinals last Thursday.

In the Dragons’ eight contests, they outscored their opponents by a combined score of 87-11. The Dragons also had 29 extra-base hits with Adam Uhl, Drew Taylor, Lucas McNew and Josh Landers each leading the way in that category. That included three home runs as a team, which were hit by McNew, Taylor and Kaden Williams.

The Dragons’ Elijah Bayes and Conner Groher were the primary run scorers. They combined to score 20 runs in the tournament.

The Dragons’ pitching staff allowed 2.5 hits per game. Pitching in the tournament were Landers, Taylor, McNew, Tyler Wheeler, Jack Hawkins, Tyler Kapust, Brady Latham and Aidan Minzenberger. No Dragons’ pitcher threw more than six innings in the tournament.

Last Thursday in their victories over Carolina Teal and Team Demarini, Hawkins and Landers yielded a combined one run on five hits on the mound. Hawkins pitched in the semifinal, while Landers was on the hill in the championship.

In addition, the Dragons won two individual skill competitions. Taylor claimed the 13U home run competition, while Williams won the 13U Speed Burner competition.

The Dragons have compiled a 130-9 record in the last three years.
