H.S. GIRLS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Henryville advances to Tipoff championship

CLARKSVILLE — Henryville improved to 3-0 and advanced to tonight’s Henryville Tipoff Tournament championship game with a 47-28 win over Clarksville on Friday.

The Hornets will face Oldenburg Academy in title game, which is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Clarksville was even with the Hornets through two quarters on Friday before Henryville exploded for a 25-point third quarter to take a 40-23 lead.

“In the third quarter, we finally hit some shots and contained better on the defensive end,” Henryville coach Josh Conrad said. “We were getting good shots in the first half, we just didn’t knock them down.”

“Henryville just came out in the third quarter and knocked down some shots and just played harder than we did,” Generals coach B.D. Ledbetter said.

Freshman Emily Hollis led Henryville for the third straight game, this time with 25 points. She knocked down four three-point shots. She was the only Hornet in double-figures.

Clarksville was led by Haley Jenkins’ nine points.

• Pioneers drop first decision: Oldenburg Academy kept Providence out of the tipoff championship with a 49-28 victory over the Pioneers on Friday.

The two teams were tied at 8-apiece after one quarter, but the defending tournament champion Twisters turned up the heat and forced 31 Providence turnovers.

“We just have to get stronger with the basketball,” Pioneers coach Brad Burden said. “We just turn it over way too much. When you give up layups because you turn it over, it’s hard to get it done.”

Oldenburg’s Kristin Ricke led all scorers with 21 points.

Lillian Hughes led Providence with 10 points. Michayla Smallwood added six on a pair of three-point shots. The Pioneers, who out-rebounded the Twisters 27-19, will play in tonight Henryville Tipoff Tournament third-place game at approximately 5:15 p.m.
