GIRLS’ SOCCER: Providence, Floyd Central pull away for sectional wins

Highlanders will meet in Thursday’s second semifinal

(Continued)

FLOYDS KNOBS — PROVIDENCE 2, CORYDON CENTRAL 0

After a scoreless first 50 minutes, Sarah Posante got Providence on the board. Eight minutes later, Emma Roesner was fouled just outside of the Corydon Central box. Jordan Reger knocked the free kick in to put the game away.

“We didn’t play our A game,” Providence coach Dave Smith admitted. “Corydon was quick to the ball. We had a lot of shots, just not much scoring.”

Corydon employed a defensive game plan that worked for most of the contest.

“They packed 10 in the box and looked for a counter attack,” Smith said. “It was a smart game plan on their part.”

Providence had beaten the Panthers 9-1 in the regular season. Corydon coach Kyle Jones was proud of the way his team fought on Tuesday.

“It shows our skill has gotten a lot better this year,” Jones said. “We had a lot of seniors who worked hard. They’re smart girls who knew they had to turn things around from the first [meeting against Providence].”

The game was Providence’s first since moving up from Class A, where it played for a state championship the past two years, to 2A.

“[The Floyd Central Sectional feels] more like a regional or semistate from the past two years,” Smith said. “This is the prize we’ve been aiming for all year — to get to Saturday and win.”
