H.S. FOOTBALL: Floyd Central routed by Male, 62-16

Bulldogs score 42 unanswered points to open game

FLOYDS KNOBS — Floyd Central had hopes of reversing last year’s outcome against Louisville Male, but those aspirations were all but dashed by halftime Friday night.

Aside from two fumbles on punts, the visiting Bulldogs scored touchdowns on their first six possessions and jumped out to a 42-3 halftime lead over the Highlanders. Floyd Central (0-1, 0-0) eventually fell to Male 62-16. The Bulldogs also defeated the Highlanders 48-7 last year.

Male Quarterback Davis Mattingly tossed his first of four touchdown passes with 10:30 left in the first quarter, as he found wide receiver Avery Haynes for a 17-yard scoring strike to put the Bulldogs on top 7-0 after Malik Malone added the extra point.

Floyd Central was forced to punt twice on its opening drive, and twice recovered Male fumbles on the returns. However, the Highlanders also put the ball on the ground as running back Garry Posey fumbled at the Male 19-yard line. The Bulldogs recovered.

Male then marched 82 yards as running back Ellis Cain scampered two yards for a touchdown put the Bulldogs up 14-0 following the extra point. Male continued to rack up the yardage and pile up the points. Cain ran for 110 yards and score three touchdowns in the first half.

The Bulldogs also stifled Floyd Central on offense. The lone points in the first half for the Highlanders came from a 43-yard field goal booted by kicker Ryan Lenz as time expired in the second quarter.

Floyd Central coach Brian Glesing conceded that the Kentucky Class 6A Male squad was a tall order for the Highlanders.

“Personnel-wise they’re bigger than us. That’s why they’re a powerhouse in Kentucky,” Glesing said.

The Highlanders scored their first touchdown of the season when junior Colton Kimm hit junior running back Gaige Klingsmith with a 79-yard touchdown pass, which made the score 49-10 with 5:15 left in the third quarter.

Klingsmith later added a score on the ground when he rushed 35 yards for a touchdown with 5:48 remaining in the fourth quarter. Klingsmith finished with 51 yards on 13 carrieson the ground and added one reception for 79.

Glesing said Floyd Central has several quality running backs at its disposal and credited Klingsmith for his performance on Friday.

“We’ve got a staple of running backs, they’re fighting for the spot,” he said.

Kimm ended up 7-of-20 through the air for 120 yards including a touchdown and an interception before being replaced late in the fourth quarter by sophomore quarterback Brady Miles.

“There were a lot of positives,” Glesing said. “Next week is a big game for us.”

Floyd Central hosts rival Providence, which fell to New Albany 28-0 in its opener, next Friday.
