H.S. ROUNDUP: Pirates beat Mitchell, fall to Lanesville in Charlestown Invitational

Jeff falls to Jasper in Hoosier Cup championship

CHARLESTOWN — Lanesville took a 3-0 lead and had a 4-0 advantage one minute into the second half and held on to beat the host Pirates 5-3 and repeat as Charlestown Boys’ Soccer Invitational championships.

Trailing 4-0, Jose Arredondo got the Pirates on the board and Rodrigo Martinez scored his first of two championship-game goals to cut the deficit in half.

However, the Eagles scored in the 66th minute rendering Martinez’s second goal in the 69th minute less threatening.

After an earlier explosive 8-4 victory over Mitchell in the opening round of the tournament, Charlestown thought it may have something for the defending champs.

“[We] looked lethargic from the long rest between games and all of the good things they had done in the first game against Mitchell — closing out on defense and controlling nice passes through the midfield to maintain possession — just simply weren't happening,” Charlestown coach Andrew Smith said.

Martinez, Arredondo and Michael Navetta dominated in the semifinal. Martinez had a hat trick just 22nd minutes into the contest and finished with four goals. Arredondo assisted on Martinez’s first two goals and scored early in the second to give the Pirates a commanding 6-3 lead. Navetta had three assists and capped the goal scoring in the 66th minute.

Bryce Shreve scored two goals in the opener and had an assist in the both games.
