HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Pioneers earn victory after Friday’s game canceled

Indianapolis Manual forfeits because of lack of players

CLARKSVILLE — The Providence High School athletic department announced on Tuesday that its home football game on Friday night with Indianapolis Manual has been canceled.

Friday’s contest was scheduled as the Pioneers’ Homecoming.

The Redskins forfeited the contest because they lack the required amount of eligible players to compete against Providence. Therefore, the Pioneers have been rewarded a victory and their record has improved to 2-3.

In a press release, Providence athletic director Mickey Golembeski stated that an attempt to find a replacement for Indianapolis Manual in either Indiana or Kentucky had been made. An opponent could not be found due to the short notice of Manual’s cancellation.

Providence coach Larry Denison had mixed feelings about not playing on Friday night. He was disappointed that the Pioneers would not get a chance to redeem themselves after falling 41-21 at Indian Creek last Friday. On the other hand, the third-year coach says it is a great opportunity for his players to recover from some bumps and bruises and prepare for their next game on Friday, Sept. 27 at Murphy Stadium against 4-0 Jeffersonville.

“Obviously, we want to be playing this week,” he said. “We want to try to get a win after last week’s loss and get some momentum heading into the game with Jeffersonville. But we’ll use this week to prepare for Jeffersonville. We’ll use it to heal up and also get back to working on fundamentals.”

Providence announced that the school’s administration will evaluate the rescheduling of Homecoming festivities. A new date for Homecoming will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
