H.S. SOCCER SECTIONAL DRAW: New Albany, Floyd girls draw each other in opening round

Bulldogs, Highlanders to meet in boys’ semis

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Floyd Central and New Albany have soccer dates in both the boys’ and the girls’ Floyd Central Sectionals after last Friday’s IHSAA tournament draw.

In the girls’ draw, the Bulldogs and Highlanders will meet in the opening round at 7 p.m. next Tuesday following the sectional’s opening match between Providence and Corydon Central.

New Albany upset Floyd Central, then defeated Jasper to win its first sectional title a year ago. The winner between Floyd and New Albany will likely face Providence, which is up to Class 2A after reaching the Class A state finals each of the past two seasons, in the first semifinal on Thursday, Oct. 10. Jeffersonville and Silver Creek will face off in the second semifinal later that night. The Devils and Dragons tied during the regular season.

The girls’ 2A championship will be played at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Charlestown, which also moved up to Class 2A along with Providence and Silver Creek, will face host Columbus North in that sectional’s only quarterfinal match next Tuesday.

Christian Academy — the lone Class A area team — drew Salem at 7:45 p.m. next Tuesday at the Class A Forest Park Sectional.

In the boys’ draw, New Albany and Floyd Central will meet in the semifinal round on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Two-time defending sectional champion Jeffersonville faces Corydon Central in Monday’s opening round with the winner getting Silver Creek in the other semifinal on Oct. 9. The semifinal winners will meet at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 with the sectional championship on the line.

Also in Class 2A, Charlestown will face Seymour on Wednesday, Oct. 9 in the Columbus North Sectional semifinal.

In the boys’ Class A Providence Sectional, the defending champion and host Pioneers open with North Harrison next Monday. The winner will face an improved Rock Creek team in the second semifinal on Wednesday, Oct. 9, following Christian Academy and Lanesville. The winners will meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 for the sectional title.

Henryville will battle Trinity Lutheran in the first semifinal on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Salem’s four-team sectional.
