HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Charlestown opens season ranked sixth

Pirates to open season on Friday against Madison

CHARLESTOWN — After going 12-1 and winning a sectional championship a year ago, Charlestown was rewarded with a Class 3A No. 6 ranking in The Associated Press preseason polls, which were released Monday.

Charlestown will open the season Friday at home against Madison. Sectional and Mid-Southern Conference rivals Corydon Central (18th) and Brownstown Central (19th) also received votes in the Class 3A poll.

Charlestown was the only local team to receive votes. However, Columbus East — a Hoosier Hills Conference rival of Jeffersonville, New Albany and Floyd Central — opens at No. 2 in the Class 4A poll. Jeff and New Albany’s future Class 6A sectional rival, Center Grove, is ranked fourth and Columbus North received votes in the 6A poll.

Evansville Reitz, which is now in Class 4A with Silver Creek, opens the season at No. 5 in the 4A poll. Lawrenceburg, which the Dragons will face in Week 9, also received votes in the 3A poll.

Gibson Southern, which eliminated Charlestown in the Class 3A regional a year ago, is 12th in the 3A poll and Indian Creek, which Providence will face on Friday, Sept. 13, is 16th in the 3A poll. Paoli — a sectional rival of Providence and Clarksville — is 11th in 2A.

West Washington, which will open the season at Eastern, is 14th in Class A.
