GREG'S PICKS: Tourney time: Postseason begins tonight

Expect great first-round game between Generals, Pioneers

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Maybe we’ll all be surprised.

This postseason seems particularly predictable. Jeffersonville, Brownstown, Borden are expected to dominate their sectionals. The winner of tonight’s Clarksville-Providence showdown will take the title of favorite at Crawford County.

Jeff will likely have to go through New Albany, and Brownstown through a pretty talented Corydon team. Crawford County could be a factor as the hosts of the Class 2A sectional. But even those potential upsets seem highly unlikely.

With that said, strange things seem to happen in the tournament. Silver Creek and the host Pirates hope to make some noise at Charlestown. Perhaps Christian Academy is playing well enough to challenge Borden.

Maybe. But probably not.

At least we have Providence-Clarksville. It’s a great way to kick off sectional week. The winner will not only go on to be the Crawford County Sectional favorite, but either is capable of making a long tournament run.

Here’s a look at tonight’s potential crosstown classic — as well as Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s other eight local sectional games:

FIRST-ROUND SECTIONAL GAMES

CLASS 4A SEYMOUR SECTIONAL

TUESDAY

Floyd Central (6-16) vs. Jeffersonville (19-3)

• Time: 6 p.m.

• Radio: WNAS-88.1 FM, WQKC-1450 AM.

• Rankings: Jeffersonville — Class 4A No. 13 AP, No. 11 IBCA.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: Floyd Central 240 (Class 4A No. 95); Jeffersonville 13 (Class 4A No. 12).

• Series all-time: Jeffersonville 47-18 (Jeff has won 13 straight in the series; Jeff is 12-4 vs. Floyd in tournament games).

• Series last 15 years: Jeffersonville 23-1 (Jeff 7-1 in tournament games).

• Regular-season matchup: At Jeffersonville 59, Floyd Central 39 on Jan. 11.

• Analysis: Floyd has played much better of late and should be improved in 2013-14. It’s unfortunate the Highlanders had to draw Jeff in the opening round.

• Greg’s Pick: Jeffersonville 77, Floyd Central 52.

New Albany (13-7) at Seymour (2-18)

• Time: Approximately 7:30 p.m.

• Radio: WNAS-88.1 FM, WQKC-1450 AM.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: New Albany 61 (Class 4A No. 44); Seymour 356 (Class 4A No. 100).

• Series last 15 years: New Albany 21-3 overall (New Albany 7-1 in tournament games).

• Regular-season matchup: New Albany 69, at Seymour 26 on Dec. 14.

• Analysis: It was a rough season for Seymour and it will come to an ugly end for the Owls.

• Greg’s Pick: New Albany 60, Seymour 41.

CLASS 3A CHARLESTOWN SECTIONAL

TUESDAY

Brownstown Central (20-1) vs. Silver Creek (9-11)

• Time: 6 p.m.

• Rankings: Brownstown Central — Class 3A No. 4 AP.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: Brownstown Central 51 (Class 3A No. 10); Silver Creek 184 (Class 3A No. 49).

• Series last 15 years: Brownstown Central 10-8 (1-1 in tournament games).

• Regular-season matchup: At Brownstown Central 39, Silver Creek 23 on Jan. 11.

• Analysis: Silver Creek’s Brandon Hoffman deserves to be in the Coach of the Year discussion after the Dragons’ second half of the season. But Brownstown seems destined for a long tournament run.

• Greg’s Pick: Brownstown Central 59, Silver Creek 47.

WEDNESDAY

Corydon Central (16-5) at Charlestown (11-9)

• Internet broadcast: CPPSB.com

• Time: 6 p.m.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: Corydon Central 106 (Class 3A No. 22); Charlestown 200 (Class 3A No. 54).

• Series last 15 years: Corydon Central 17-2 (Corydon 2-0 in tournament games).

• Regular-season matchup: Corydon Central 60, at Charlestown 50 on Feb. 2.

• Analysis: Corydon has knocked the Pirates out of the tournament the past two years and the Panthers won in Charlestown earlier this month. Even at home, that’s a lot of history to overcome for C’town.

• Greg’s Pick: Corydon Central 59, Charlestown 52.

NOTE: More information at www.charlestownpiratepride.com/boysbasketballsectionalpage.htm.

North Harrison (13-7) vs. Scottsburg (4-16)

• Time: Approximately 7:30 p.m.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: North Harrison 173 (Class 3A No. 44); Scottsburg 306 (Class 3A No. 86).

• Series last 15 years: Scottsburg 15-3.

• Regular-season matchup: North Harrison 73, at Scottsburg 45 on Jan. 5.

• Analysis: Scottsburg seemed to find something at the end of the year. But it won’t be enough to overcome a North Harrison program having its best season in nearly a decade.

• Greg’s Pick: North Harrison 63, Scottsburg 53.

CLASS 2A CRAWFORD COUNTY SECTIONAL

TUESDAY

Henryville (0-19) at Crawford County (13-7)

• Time: 6 p.m.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: Henryville 412 (Class 2A No. 100); Crawford County 179 (Class 2A No. 27).

• Series last 15 years: No meetings.

• Regular-season matchup: The regular-season matchup between the Wolfpack and Hornets was canceled due to the Feb. 21 winter forecast.

• Analysis: Henryville will finish the season without a win, but the improvement late in the season was obvious. The Hornets pushed Oldenburg Academy, West Washington and Indianapolis Herron in three of their last six games.

• Greg’s Pick: Crawford County 64, Henryville 41.

Clarksville (15-5) vs. Providence (17-3)

• Time: Approximately 7:30 p.m.

• Rankings: Clarksville — Class 2A No. 8 AP; Providence — Class 2A No. 3 AP.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: Clarksville 120 (Class 2A No. 12); Providence 69 (Class 2A No. 5).

• Series last 15 years: Providence 21-7 (Providence 2-0 in tournament games).

• Regular-season matchups: Providence 38, Clarksville 36 (Silver Creek Holiday Tournament); At Providence 60, Clarksville 51 (regular-season matchup).

• Analysis: This is the second neutral-court matchup between the Generals and Pioneers this season. The first one was a classic. It could have gone either way — and that will be the case again tonight. It’s a toss-up. I’m taking Providence only because the Pioneers have been more consistent throughout the season.

• Greg’s Pick: Providence 47, Clarksville 46.

CLASS A BORDEN SECTIONAL

TUESDAY

Rock Creek Academy (8-14) vs. Lanesville (12-8)

• Time: 6 p.m.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: Rock Creek 297 (Class A No. 52); Lanesville 213 (Class A No. 27).

• Series last 15 years: Lanesville 13-2 (Lanesville 2-0 in tournament games).

• Regular-season matchup: Lanesville 67, at Rock Creek 45.

• Analysis: Rock Creek beat Cannelton last Friday for its first win in over a month. The Lions sputtered down the stretch. That’s not good heading into a matchup against an experienced Lanesville team that beat the Lions by 22 points earlier this season.

• Greg’s Pick: Lanesville 69, Rock Creek 49.

South Central (13-7) at Borden (17-3)

• Time: Approximately 7:30 p.m.

• Rankings: Borden — Class A No. 10 AP.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: South Central 264 (Class A No. 41); Borden 177 (Class A No. 16).

• Series last 15 years: Borden 12-11 (Borden 3-0 in tournament games, including 71-51 in last year’s sectional championship).

• Regular-season matchup: At Borden 77, South Central 42

• Analysis: It won’t be 35 points again, but the Braves should win comfortably again.

• Greg’s Pick: Borden 69, South Central 58.
