GREG'S PICKS: Tourney time: Postseason begins tonight

Expect great first-round game between Generals, Pioneers

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Maybe we’ll all be surprised.

This postseason seems particularly predictable. Jeffersonville, Brownstown, Borden are expected to dominate their sectionals. The winner of tonight’s Clarksville-Providence showdown will take the title of favorite at Crawford County.

Jeff will likely have to go through New Albany, and Brownstown through a pretty talented Corydon team. Crawford County could be a factor as the hosts of the Class 2A sectional. But even those potential upsets seem highly unlikely.

With that said, strange things seem to happen in the tournament. Silver Creek and the host Pirates hope to make some noise at Charlestown. Perhaps Christian Academy is playing well enough to challenge Borden.

Maybe. But probably not.

At least we have Providence-Clarksville. It’s a great way to kick off sectional week. The winner will not only go on to be the Crawford County Sectional favorite, but either is capable of making a long tournament run.

Here’s a look at tonight’s potential crosstown classic — as well as Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s other eight local sectional games:

Floyd Central (6-16) vs. Jeffersonville (19-3)

• Time: 6 p.m.

• Radio: WNAS-88.1 FM, WQKC-1450 AM.

• Rankings: Jeffersonville — Class 4A No. 13 AP, No. 11 IBCA.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: Floyd Central 240 (Class 4A No. 95); Jeffersonville 13 (Class 4A No. 12).

• Series all-time: Jeffersonville 47-18 (Jeff has won 13 straight in the series; Jeff is 12-4 vs. Floyd in tournament games).

• Series last 15 years: Jeffersonville 23-1 (Jeff 7-1 in tournament games).

• Regular-season matchup: At Jeffersonville 59, Floyd Central 39 on Jan. 11.

• Analysis: Floyd has played much better of late and should be improved in 2013-14. It’s unfortunate the Highlanders had to draw Jeff in the opening round.

• Greg’s Pick: Jeffersonville 77, Floyd Central 52.

New Albany (13-7) at Seymour (2-18)

• Time: Approximately 7:30 p.m.

• Radio: WNAS-88.1 FM, WQKC-1450 AM.

• Computer-based Sagarin rankings: New Albany 61 (Class 4A No. 44); Seymour 356 (Class 4A No. 100).

• Series last 15 years: New Albany 21-3 overall (New Albany 7-1 in tournament games).

• Regular-season matchup: New Albany 69, at Seymour 26 on Dec. 14.

• Analysis: It was a rough season for Seymour and it will come to an ugly end for the Owls.

• Greg’s Pick: New Albany 60, Seymour 41.
