Yard sale to benefit local dog

Sale is Friday and Saturday

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Volunteers from Southern Indiana Animal Rescue are having a yard sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 512 E. Maple St. in downtown Jeffersonville to benefit a dog named Solomon.

The goal is to raise at least $1,200 needed to pay for medical treatments Solomon needs.

Solomon was found Aug. 4 in a Henryville field by a group of volunteers rebuilding a home for a victim of the March 2 tornadoes. When he was first found, Solomon was emaciated, anemic and blind, said Southern Indiana Animal Rescue volunteer Elizabeth Starck, who is hosting this weekend’s sale. He was also infested with fleas and ticks.

Solomon spent almost a week at Shively Animal Hospital after his rescue, undergoing tests and building up his strength. While he was hospitalized, doctors found Solomon tested positive for blastomycosis — a fungus found in the ground that doctors believe was stirred up when tornadoes ravaged the area. The blastomycosis infection took over Solomon’s eyes, causing him to lose his sight. He is receiving treatments now and will soon need surgery to have his eyes removed. The cost of his medical care is expected to be about $1,200, Starck said.

“We have raised some funds already,” Starck said. “[But] we are hoping to raise more.”

Starck said Friday and Saturday’s sale will feature all types of items, including furniture, toys, books, bedding, glassware and electronics.

“Items are being dropped off daily,” Starck said Wednesday. “So I keep seeing new things.”

Starck added that Solomon is temporarily living with a foster family and is doing “very well.”
