Henryville HS yearbook nets staffers awards

HENRYVILLE — The Henryville High School Hornets’ Nest yearbook won three awards in the 2012 Indiana High School Press Association statewide Harvey Awards competition. Awards were announced at the IHSPA annual fall convention, last Friday at Franklin College, according to a press release from Jolie Lindley, Hornets’ Nest adviser.

Competing in Division 1 for small schools, 2012 Hornets’ Nest editor Caitlin Soard won second place for chronological/nontraditional theme development for the 2012 yearbook “This Is How We See It.” Soard is currently a freshman journalism major at Franklin College. Rachel Hamm, a 2012 graduate, won third place for best feature photo, and current juniors Morgan Perry and Cody Phillips, along with 2012 graduate Cady Munk, won first place for best feature writing and reporting for their story about bus drivers transporting students home during the March 2 tornadoes.

This was the first year for Henryville students to enter the Harvey Awards, which annually honor the best in scholastic journalism from throughout the state in three divisions based on school size. Other schools to win yearbook awards in Division 1 included Paoli High School, NorthWood High School, Scottsburg High School, Turkey Run High School, Lincoln High School, Bishop Chatard High School and Tippecanoe Valley High School. Area schools Floyd Central High School, New Albany High School and Jeffersonville High School also won awards in Divisions 2 and 3, according to the release.

Additionally, the 2011 Hornets’ Nest — “You” — was recognized at the IHSPA convention as a finalist for the 2011-2012 Hoosier Star award, which was won by Bishop Chatard High School. In the convention exhibit area, HHS’s book was included in a prominent display of all the statewide Hoosier Star finalists. The 2012 Hornets’ Nest has been submitted for Hoosier Star consideration, with award designation to be announced after it is judged later this fall.
