Healthy baby girl firstborn in Floyd County in 2014

NEW ALBANY — Adelaide Lorraine Goerss is bright eyed, beautiful and healthy, and at about 7 a.m. on New Year’s Day, she became the first baby born in Floyd County in 2014.

Physicians and nurses at the Birthing Center at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services deliver about 1,000 babies annually, but the firstborn of the new year is always a specialty.

Adelaide and her parents were presented by the hospital with a special diaper bag full of goodies and presents to mark the occasion.

She was a few days late, and her father, Douglas Goerss, said he didn’t really consider the fact that Adelaide could be the firstborn of 2014 until late on New Year’s Eve after the decision had been made to induce labor.

Her mother, Sabrina Bell, said friends and family naturally wanted Adelaide to be born on a certain date to coincide with another birthday or holiday, but added the distinction of being the first baby of 2014 in Floyd County certainly is special.

But Goerss wouldn’t have minded pushing the birth back a few hours.

“I told her to have the baby at 11:59 p.m. to show that we’re different,” he said.

Adelaide weighed 9 pounds and 6 ounces, and was 20 and a half inches long at birth. She is the couple’s second child, as Adelaide’s 4-year-old brother Brennan was by her mother’s side on Wednesday in the hospital room.

“He’s been a really great big brother,” Bell said.

The family is from Crawford County. Goerss said he hadn’t slept since Sunday, so the fact that his daughter was the first child born in Floyd County this year hadn’t really sunk in as of Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re just happy that everything is OK,” he said.

Adelaide is influenced by Goerss’s German roots.

“It’s just an old-fashioned name that we liked,’” he said.
