6 P.M. UPDATE: Fire damages storage units in Memphis; none injured

Structure suffers significant damage; arson under consideration

MEMPHIS — No one was injured in fire at D&D Mini Storage on Tuesday afternoon and authorities are investigating the blaze as a possible arson.

Sellersburg Fire Department Chief Boyce Adams said the fire started about 1 p.m. and firefighters are still working to determine the origin and cause of the blaze.

Clark County Sheriff’s Department Maj. John Kahafer said detectives were called to the scene on the 13,000 block of U.S. 31 and are investigating the fire as a possible arson. Sheriff’s investigator Randy Burton said two men with pick-up trucks were seen in the area before the fire began. He said deputies are working to locate the pick-up trucks, which are red and maroon in color.

“As they [the men] were approached by the person that was renting the storage unit, they fled the area.” he said. “She opened the unit and then saw that is was on fire.”

Adams said the facility is a single building, approximately 150 feet by 20 feet, with 34 units. Adams said each of the units had suffered at least some smoke damage, and about 25 of the units had fire damage.
