Bringing home the gold: Floyd county NJROTC programs win in competition

Officers cleaned up at competition last weekend

FLOYD COUNTY — If there’s anything they know like the back of their hands, it’s their drill manual.

Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp. units from new Albany High School and Floyd Central High School came home from a competition last weekend with several trophies.

Floyd Central’s color guard won the Navy’s Area 3 East Regional Championship Drill Meet in Columbus, Ohio. It was its first championship win in 20 years and the only time it’s come away from that competition with a first-place award.

Cadets Kayla Jones, Nathan Cabral, Destiny DeSpain and Alexis Martin were on the winning color guard team.

They also brought home a second place win in armed individual drill regulation, and fourth place for individual in-place drill, among others.

New Albany High School also attended the competition and brought home its share of trophies. Cadets Chandler Berry, Briendyn Berry, Danielle Brown and Ty Demuth brought home six trophies and earned a nomination to the Navy National Competition in Pensacola, Fla., next month.
