The body found Sunday in a car submerged in the Ohio River was that of a missing Charlestown man, according to Clark County Coroner Edwin M. “Huck” Coots.

Coots said preliminary autopsy findings indicate that Terry Wayne Young, 28, drowned after crashing his car into a Big Four Bridge support on Riverside Drive in Jeffersonville. After striking the concrete support, Young’s car traveled along the street’s southern sidewalk for approximately 70 feet before turning south down a grassy bank and into the Ohio River.

“I feel like it was an accident, at this point,” Coots said Monday.

“We have no reason to believe there is foul play involved,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin. “We don’t think there’s any kind of suicide thing involved.”

Goodin added, “I don’t think he had his seat belt on.”

Coots said Young was last seen around 12:30 a.m. Friday. A family member reported Young missing between 10 and 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Goodin said.

Goodin said a friend told police Young was last seen leaving Ernesto’s Mex Mex Grill in the 700 block of West Riverside Drive. The restaurant is about four blocks west of where Young’s car crashed.

Louisville Metro Police divers located Young’s car 30 to 35 feet from the Jeffersonville shoreline early Sunday afternoon, and the car was pulled from the water around 2:15 p.m.

Young’s body was taken to the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville, where it was identified and autopsied on Monday.

Coots, who attended the autopsy, said it is likely that Young suffered serious injuries when his car struck the north face of the bridge support along Riverside Drive.

Goodin said it remains unclear why Young crashed into the bridge support. On Sunday, he said the terrain at the accident’s location would likely prohibit a reconstruction of the crash, something normally done following a traffic fatality.

“As a regular routine, we always check toxicology,” said Goodin, adding that he knows of no specific evidence that implies Young might have been intoxicated.
