Jeffersonville sailor helped fight assault ship fire

Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 3rd Class Hayley Craig from Jeffersonville was one of the U.S. Navy personnel who helped fight a fire aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard. On the morning of July 12, the fire broke out aboard the ship while it was moored pier side at Naval Base San Diego. Base and shipboard firefighters responded to the fire. Bonhomme Richard was going through a maintenance availability, which began in 2018. The Associated Press reported Thursday that the fire had been extinguished. Rear Adm. Philip E. Sobeck called the last 24 hours of the firefight aboard the amphibious assault ship “amazing,” with the fire reaching up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of the vessel. “The ship can be repaired, whether or not it will be repaired, that will be determined,” he said.It could cost an estimated $4 billion to replace the ship if it is deemed un-salvageable.
