A Louisville man was arrested Wednesday in the Dec. 8 fatal shooting of a Jeffersonville man at a New Albany apartment complex, as authorities called the encounter a botched drug deal.

Thomas R. Gunter Jr., 22, is already in a Louisville jail on probation violation for another offense, Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson said at a brief news conference Wednesday.

The county will attempt to have him extradited here to face a murder charge in the death Jeremy W. Gibson, 21, who was shot in the chest at Carriage House Apartments, across the street from IU Southeast, just before 7:50 p.m. Dec. 8 and died at University Hospital in Louisville.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements pointed to an attempted drug transaction, Henderson said. Though the substance in question was not known for certain, Henderson said some evidence suggested cocaine was involved.

“We will continue to prosecute drug dealers at a very aggressive pace,” Henderson said.

Henderson declined to elaborate or to say which man was believed to be buying and which was selling. Relatives of either Gunter or Gibson lived in Carriage House Apartments, Henderson said.

A call to a telephone listing for Gunter reached a message indicating the number had been disconnected.

Police said the bullet struck Gibson below his left nipple and came out his back.

According to a police report, a resident had heard a gunshot and came outside to see Gibson and another man next to a car. The two appeared to be trying to retrieve something from the ground.

Police had seized a maroon vehicle and combed it for clues.

Gibson’s grandmother had said he was in Jeffersonville with an aunt just two hours before he was shot, then “made a couple of calls” and borrowed his cousin’s car and left.
