A New Albany man surrendered to police Monday after a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges he sexually molested an 8-year-old boy.

Rodney A. Cherry, 38, of the 800 block of Cedar Bough, has been charged with two counts of child molesting — one a class A felony and the other a class C felony — and is being held at the Floyd County Jail.

His bond has been set at $200,000 court cash but has not yet been posted, corrections officers said Tuesday afternoon.

Capt. Keith Whitlow, New Albany Police Department chief of detectives, said the department’s new Crimes Against Children Unit — which consists of Sgt. Sherri Knight and Detective Carrie J. East — is alleging that Cherry engaged in oral sex and sexual fondling with an 8-year-old boy in a New Albany home.

Police declined to comment on whether Cherry and his proposed victim were related or if they were living in the same residence.

Detectives are also investigating the possibility that Cherry molested another young child in Louisville, but no charges relating to that incident have yet been filed.
