Retirees and disabled residents in Southern Indiana will soon have a new place to go for help with benefits.

The Social Security office at 2656 Charlestown Road in New Albany is moving to a new building at 3700 Blackiston Boulevard, near Southern Indiana Rehab Hospital.

The new office opens Dec. 4. Transporting equipment such as furniture and computers the previous week means limited service will be possible from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1, district manager John Dreier said.

During that week, customers are asked to call the national service number, 800-772-1213, or visit socialsecurity.gov on the Web.

The lease with Love Development had expired, Dreier said, and the federal government built a new headquarters about 50 percent bigger.

Seven Indiana counties, including Clark and Floyd, are served by the staff of 29; Dreier said about 130 people visit on an average day.

The office’s phone number will remain 812-948-5288, and working hours will continue to be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
