Silver Creek (20-10) scored early and often in a five-inning, 18-0 victory over Brownstown Central in the opening round of the Class 3A Silver Creek Sectional on Thursday.
“We really put the barrell on the ball tonight and it was good to see,” assistant coach Scott Jennings said. “We beat a good Brownstown club tonight.”
Jacob Armstrong muscled out two home runs in the first two innings, Jamie Valvano turned in three hits with a double, and the Dragons’ offense was able to take advantage of seven Brownstown errors to coast to the win.
Armstrong drove in five runs on his two home runs, while Valvano brought home three more.
Lucas Barnett won the game on the mound for the Dragons, allowing just three hits in the affair. Barnett walked two, while the Dragons’ defense had just one error in the game. Barnett helped his own cause with three hits and two RBI.
“Barnett located pitches very well tonight,” Jennings said.
Also for Silver Creek, Matt Hawn, Lane Taylor and Brooks Howell singled twice. The Dragons had 15 hits in the game.
Silver Creek will face Corydon Central in the semifinals of the tournament on Monday. The Panthers drubbed Scottsburg in the other opening-round game, 13-0.
• Borden wins tri-meet: On Wednesday at New Salisbury Golf Course, Borden compiled a team score of 176 to win a triangular meet against North Harrison and South Central.
Braves’ senior Matt Smith earned medalist honors with a 38. Rounding out the scoring for Borden were Tony Wagoner III with a 44 and Jesse McCombs and Jared Cook each with a 47. Teammate T.J. Fraley added a 48.
“Matt has been playing very well for us the last few matches,” Braves’ head coach Tony Wagoner II said. “I think we are finally scoring the way we should. I hope it continues to fall together as we head to sectional.”
Borden faces Henryville today at Covered Bridge Golf Club.
